Future Star - Temetrius “Ja” Morant

5.30.2018  |  Liam Blutman

Chances are Ja Morant isn’t somebody you’ve heard of. That will definitely change. Ja is a point guard at Murray State who started all 32 games as a freshman, in those 32 games he compiled 12.7 PPG, 6.5 RPG, and 6.3 APG. Stat sheet stuffer. The 6’3” point guard from Dalzell, South Carolina has a great chance to be the best player Murray State has ever produced. Cameron Payne, Isaiah Canaan, Marcus Brown, Jeff Martin, and Popeye Jones are 5 recognizable names from Murray State who had great college careers. Recently, Canaan was the 34th overall pick in the 2013 draft and Payne went 14th overall in the 2015 draft. I believe Ja Morant has a great chance to be a lottery pick, this kid is incredible.

Morant has great floor vision which was on display all year, we saw it early when he dropped 14 assists at home against Eastern Illinois. Ja does a good job at picking off passes in the passing line as he nabbed 30 steals last year. His handles are just crazy good, his layup package is elite, and he has a great vertical which can be seen when he’s dunking, grabbing a rebound, or hanging in the air forever with a smooth layup. Morant shot 46% from the field and 30% from 3 as a freshman. I expect him to shoot better from 3 this upcoming season and improve that facet of his game. He has so much potential and I am so excited to see how great he has become when next season arrives.

My predictions for Ja Morant this upcoming season are…

  • 17.6 PPG 7.3 RPG 8.1 APG
  • 1.3 SPG
  • Shoots better than 36% from 3
  • Leads Murray State to a regular season conference title, and conference tournament championship
  • The basketball world falls in love with him after Morant lights it up in the NCAA tournament featuring an upset win or two
  • Hyped up after the NCAA Tournament, leaves for the NBA, drafted in the lottery

Ja told me through Twitter that he wants to win the OVC championship again and make a deeper run in the NCAA Tournament. In addition to these he’d like to be a great teammate. You can follow Ja on Twitter @igotgame_12

Simply put Ja Morant has the skills and all the tools to become a star in college basketball as well as a really good NBA player.
