Report: Some NBA Teams Expecting Free Agency in October

“The line, of course, may keep moving”.

On May 1st, the NBA officially issued a statement postponing its draft lottery, which had originally been scheduled for May 19th.

Now, according to Marc Stein of the New York Times, some teams are expecting the 2020 draft to be held in September, with the free agency opening as late as October 1st.

“Amid so much chatter about the dizzying number of schedule/playoff structure formats flying around the NBA this week: Some teams expect the NBA Draft to now land in September … with forecasts of free agency starting as late as Oct. 1,” Stein posted to Twitter. “The line, of course, may keep moving”.

That being said, there is still no set date for the return of the 2020-21 NBA season – but there’s been plenty of talk surrounding how exactly it would, or could resume.

If the league does decide to restart this current season, the question will be whether it should pick up with the regular-season games or simply move right into the postseason.

Chief Communications Officer Mike Bass said in a statement posted to Twitter that the NBA has been in contact with The Walt Disney Company about “restarting the 2019-20 NBA season in late July”.

This would entail using its Florida-based ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex as a “single site for an NBA campus for games, practices and housing”, Bass stated.

In the meantime, free agency is set to begin on June 30th at 6 p.m. ET.
